RODA DE CÔCO
Toronto's favorite Brazilian artist Aline Morales, brings to the stage of the party the richness of brazilian dancing rhythms; including Côco, Ciranda and Ijexá, joined by some members of the maracatu group «Baque de Bamba» and other special guests, this raw music will make you dance GUARANTEED!!!
African-influenced musical rhythm that originated in Northeastern Brazil. «Côco» may also refer to the style of dance performed to the music, a kind of stomping.
The name «Côco» (Portuguese for «coconut») is a common Northeastern Brazilian slang for head, referring to the fact that song lyrics are often improvised. Côco is often performed with a repetitive musical beat and call and response singing reminiscent of Capoeira music. The music is commonly performed at traditional parties in the Northeast, such as weekend street parties and Carnival. Coco is also alternatively known as «embolada» (another slang word, meaning «entangling», referring to the fast, slurred, machine-gun style of singing).
The characteristic sound of côco arises from four instruments commonly used in its performance: the ganzá, alfaia, pandeiro, and triangle. Performers also often wear wooden clogs, the stomping of which adds a fifth percussive element.
Also charmed by the voice of Morales, Forrónite plays live Forró: Brazilian couple dancing music. The repertoire will oscillate from traditional renditions to contemporary interpretations of this delicious musical genre born in the North and Northeast region of Brazil. The forró makers also include esteemed musician Louis Simão (accordion), Carlie Howell (bass), Mari Palhares (triangulo) Jessica Hana (Rabeca), and special guest Zeca Polina. This crew knows how to forró and the dancing will not stop!
Following a string of outstanding performances, also part of the New Canadian Music Orchestra, opening for Sergio Mendes, and a stellar performance at Luminato 2016, Aline graces the stage at Geary Lane with a five-piece band that will energize the crowd with their infectious blend of forró, maracatu, and côco music. Be prepared for a raw forró set with special guests and more. Morales uses a traditional sound to invoke a new musical movement in Toronto and the world, blending and exploring the world of music Brazil and Toronto have to offer.
A.K.A Dj Forsforita! Ecuadorian power womxn, multidisciplinary artist and Dj based in Toronto. Firecracker holds deep roots within Brazilian culture here in Toronto and Brazilian music in general. She will most definitely keep you dancing all night, spinning the best of forró and other funky Brazilian/Latin rhythms.
