TIFF + John Woo = Summer Plans Solved
We've just added John Woo's action-packed Hong Kong classic HARD BOILED to our Cinematheque programme for a special 35mm screening on July 29, introduced by Toronto's own Colin Geddes.
Chow Yun-fat brings his signature mix of boyish charm and killer instinct to the role of Tequila, a veteran cop known for his unorthodox methods, who becomes obsessed with nailing a brutal arms dealer following the death of his partner (who was just about to retire, of course). He soon finds an ally in an undercover cop (Tony Leung Chiu-wai, who would play a similar role ten years later in Infernal Affairs) who is posing as an assassin in the employ of a powerful crime syndicate. In the midst of a gangland power struggle, the two unlikely partners set out to bring down the bad guys, culminating in a spectacular, 45-minute battle in a hospital that serves as a front for the gang's black-market weapons stash.
Twenty-five years later, HARD BOILED remains just as wildly fresh and vibrant as when it first hit screens — it's the kind of movie magic most directors can only dream about creating.
