Art and play are not dichotomous, art can and should be as spontaneous and pleasurable as play. “Play” is an exuberant exploration of color, texture and technique, where we see a emerging artist finding her feet and making new discoveries about herself and her art. Suman is an abstract mixed media artist. Her desire to learn and experiment with various mediums has led to the creation of an eclectic body of work. In her journey of artistic discovery, a new personal narrative unfolded, leading Suman into an exhilarating passion for painting. “Play” signifies a defining moment in her creative self-discovery. “Play” is Suman Goyal’s debut show.
Opening Reception: November 10th, 7-10pm
Exhibition runs from November 10-19th
Tuesday & Wednesday by appointment
Suman is a second generation South Asian woman from Toronto.
She divides her time between painting and her marketing company Viva Soul Tropical Properties.
Her 2018 project An Inherited Aesthetic will focus on creative identity and its antecedents.
It will showcase photographs of vintage marriage trousseau sarees of Indian immigrant woman who arrived in Toronto during the 1960’s. The photographs will pay homage to the artistic mastery of these textiles and juxtapose them alongside the stories of the women who brought them to Toronto as young brides.
“An Inherited Aesthetic” will bring to light the lived experiences of women from the Indian subcontinent who travelled across the Atlantic and contributed to the tapestry of Canada’s settlement narratives.
In “An Inherited Aesthetic,” Suman explores her artistic sensibilities and how they have been influenced by her cultural inheritance as a second generation South Asian woman.
