Muslims arrived to Turtle Island as settlers and have been here for over 150 years. Many of the benefits we have as settlers come at the expense of Indigenous peoples who continue to face ongoing injustices. As Canadians, we share a responsibility to fulfill the Calls to Action brought forward by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. At the same time, as Canadians, Muslims continue to be marginalized within Canadian society. Indigenous Peoples and Muslim Canadians are reclaiming their own narratives. Many people are not aware that there are people who are Indigenous and Muslims. The purpose of this workshop is to educate the attendees about the experiences of First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) in Canada, and to continue these dialogues with one another.
Attendees will have an opportunity to gain unique insight from our panelists, including an individual of Indigenous-Muslim heritage and an understanding of the significance of multi-faceted identities, and how we can draw connections between and amongst these identities to stand in solidarity in order to walk forward in a good way.
In addition, representatives from Naseeha (Youth Helpline) and The Canadian Muslim Vote will share issues facing students and will encourage participants to get civically engaged.
Doors will open at 6:30 pm. Please join us for a light reception before the event.
