AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario
317 Dundas Street West, Toronto, Ontario M5T 1G4
As the city revels in the Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors exhibition, First Thursday keeps exploring ways that artists create immersive worlds that either reflect or project onto the universes they inhabit. Nowhere is this more explicit than with the night’s headliner, Clara Venice, whose live performance integrates a virtual band of “hologlamorous personae”.
Clara is often described as a Theremin prodigy, occupying a truly unique place on Toronto’s music scene. Matching old-fashioned instruments like ukulele and glockenspiel with electric violin and synths, its live manifestation is bathed in truly 21st century projection technologies.
Toronto-based scholar and composer Mitchell Akiyama further explores our often-forgotten appreciation of art’s multisensory dimension by using sound as a starting point to talk about the collective or private resonances its absence can produce. Montreal-based performance artist Alexis O’Hara, on the other hand, embraces the “transcendent potential of the accidental”, and in her work reflects elements embedded in both found environments and materials.
DJ duo V∆NESS∆ and Pammm will bring their Electric Circus party to Galleria Italia, and artist Leeay Aikawa will design a one-of-a-kind poster for the night. As always, don’t miss a unique opportunity to see a curated selection from Out of the Vaults or drinks and food from the Night Market.
Tickets go on sale on March 8 at 10 am. Online only.
