H.A.P. (History + Art = Peace) is an educational and community arts-based initiative developed by ALPHA Education, a non-profit organization located in Toronto committed to fostering awareness for the history of WWII in Asia in the interests of furthering the values of justice, peace, and reconciliation.

PILLARS OF THE H.A.P. PROJECT:
— To remember, reflect, and investigate stories and human right violations from WWII in Asia through the arts
— As a community, to recognize our interconnectedness and responsibility to ensure the stories of victims and survivors of past atrocities do not go unheard
— Acknowledge art as a medium to create spaces for cross-cultural empathy and reconciliation to occur

To foster a deeper understanding of history, human rights issues and social justice values, you are invited to explore the history of WWII in Asia through the arts. Use visual arts to express the 2018 theme of «Catalyzing Hope» in the context of the Asia-Pacific War. To complete your submission, please ensure to include your applicant agreement form, reflection, and digital images of you art in your email by Friday, June 8th 11:59PM (ET). Incomplete application packages will not be considered.

CATEGORIES:
Artists from various walks of life can enter into two categories:
— Youth (14 — 25)
— Open (any age)

VISUAL ARTS:
— Photo essay, painting, mixed-media, drawing, ink
— May submit up to 3 photographs
— Original work must be submitted. For digital artwork or photography, please submit in high resolution

All finalists will get the opportunity to showcase their work online and at:
— Metro Hall, Toronto (June 29 – July 6)
— ALPHA’s Asia-Pacific Peace Museum and Education Centre, Toronto (July 9 – July 13)

WHAT ARE THE PRIZES?
— Stage 1: «History + Art = Peace» (HAP) award and $100 in cash (See «How Does It Work?»)
— Stage 2: Prizes are awarded to in the form of gift cards. Gift cards are awarded 1 per entry.
— Grand Prize Winner (Youth Category): $100
— Runner Up (Youth Category): $50
— Grand Prize Winner (Open Category): $100
— Runner Up (Open Category): $50
*All entries will have the chance to be displayed on ALPHA merchandise and promotions for the 2018-2019 year, with credits to the artist and artist permission.
*In order for the art contest to operate as indicated, there must be at least 10 entries from each category after the initial screening

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Stage 1
— All entries are examined by the screening committee. Entries that complete stage 1 will be exhibited on ALPHA's social media platforms.
— All entries will be assessed by a select panel of judges. Using the judging criteria below, judges will select the recipient of the «History + Art = Peace» (HAP) award and $100 in cash. The HAP award recipient may also enter stage 2 and be eligible for other prizes.

Stage 2
— Following examination, selected entries will be exhibited on ALPHA’s social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) until the official deadline of Thursday, July 12 11:59PM (ET)
— Online audience vote, tallied across all social media platforms with the most “likes”, will determine the grand prize winner and runner up winner in each age category
— Spectators visiting exhibitions from June 29 – July 13 must place their vote online

Stage 3
— Winners will be publicly announced at the reception on Friday, July 13
