SHIZUNE (Lonigo, Italy)
shizune.bandcamp.com/
Shizune play a brand of screamo/hardcore that’s intensely melodic, emotional and meticulously arranged. Interlocking and structured guitar work by Francesco Santolin and Filippo Ranheiro engage us with momentous and thoughtful riffs, held together by drummer Stefano Santagiuliana’s sheer intensity. All this is combined with bassist Filippo Ranghiero’s tasteful underscoring. Lyrically, vocalist Enrico Maule calls on a collage of languages including Japanese, English, French and Italian. Following the tradition of great Italian screamo that’s come before, Shizune’s studio recordings display a strong and unified aesthetic vision. Shizune has over nine studio r...ecordings released over the last six years on labels such as Dog Knights and Driftwood Records. Enlisting the support of USA based engineers such as Jack Shirley (The Atomic Garden) and Will Killingsworth (Dead Air) on mixing and mastering duties exemplifies Shizune’s articulate approach to releasing music. Not to be missed.
LYTIC (NYC)
Shadowy screamogrind from the big city, featuring members of legendary acts such as Daesu, Off Minor and Saetia (!) Give in to the mystery and be rewarded.
DIGEST (Toronto/NYC)
digest-hc.bandcamp.com
Dark and brooding d-beat influenced hardcore. An emergent project conceived by vocalist Vanessa Fever, Digest’s live performance offers a 13-minute vision of catharsis against the grain of the dominating culture. Brooklyn based drummer Keean Mansour’s participation in the band exists in defiance of a border regime that continues to destroy lives. Digest released their first demo cassette, a focused and intense collection of songs via Belle Epoque Publishing in January, and have since embarked on two Eastern USA tours.
WORST DAYS (Providence)
worstdays.bandcamp.com/
Chaotic and blistering hardcore with seriously mathematical delivery. Guitarist Alan Hague’s guitar work employs an impressive technical and tonal array through creative use of pedals, bolstered by drummer Chris Matherly’s pummeling and calculated style. The band’s 2017 release “Someone Has It Worse” displays a unique approach to the genre that’s consistently engaging, and was released collaboratively via several labels internationally. Simply (or not so simply) a refreshing blend of influences!
