🌟This doubleheader screening pairs François Truffaut’s short LES MISTONS with Claude Chabrol’s debut film LE BEAU SERGE where Gérard Blain, once known as the “French James Dean,” cemented his stardom.
💘 François Truffaut’s early short film LES MISTONS featured an appearance from Blain that launched him into stardom. Blain and his then-wife Bernadette Lafont star in a story about a pack of adolescent misfits who set out to play a series of plans on the beautiful woman with whom they are infatuated.
🏡 LE BEAU SERGE is a seminal work of the French New Wave that follows François, a young theology student (Jean-Claude Brialy) as he returns to his small hometown and reunites with his childhood friend Serge (Blain), who has become a hopeless drunk.
“The nouvelle vague’s first feature is no manifesto, but it embodies the movement’s spirit as fully as any film of its time [:] It’s a quiet but unmistakable call to arms.” — Terrence Rafferty
🏆 LE BEAU SERGE won the Prix Jean Vigo
